“I lived then in dusty Odesa” (Literary Odesa)

In old Odesa, it is hard to find a street that has not known the footsteps of a writer — or at least the shadow of one of their characters. This city has a way of turning addresses into lines of literature: here, literature is not “somewhere in a book”, it lives on façades, in squares, on staircases and in Odesa legends that outlast any poster.
The “Literary Odesa” route takes you to places where writers lived, visited, worked and found inspiration. Pushkinska Street (formerly Italiiska) preserves the house connected with the poet’s southern exile, while Primorsky Boulevard keeps the memory of walks and conversations that still seem to echo through the rustling plane trees.
On the steps of the Archaeological Museum — once the city’s first public library — it is easy to catch that feeling of youthful dreams about distant journeys: as if “Scarlet Sails” might appear not on the page, but on the horizon.
The Odesa Opera House is a chapter of its own: Pushkin, Mickiewicz and Gogol all came here; Tchaikovsky, Chekhov and Nechui-Levytsky waited for premieres and felt the excitement of the stage. Odesa has always known how to mix genres: a novel on one street, a comedy on another, and suddenly a tragedy in a side lane… yet somehow the city still smiles at the end.
There are legends told in a lower voice — like the story of the “burned volume” and the house where its characters are still said to linger. And then there is Moldavanka — a neighbourhood written not in ink, but in life: Sholem Aleichem, Babel, later Zhvanetsky — and an entire Odesa shaped by their voices and rhythms.
The Literary Museum is the final touch, where the city even manages to make fun of itself: the Briefcase, Rabinovich, the “Antelope-Gnu”, Sailor Sonya — monuments here are not only “for solemnity”, but for mood as well.
This tour is a walk through an Odesa that reads itself. And does it beautifully.

What you’ll see and learn

Why in Odesa “every street remembers someone” — and how the city preserves literature not in books, but in stone and everyday habits.
Pushkinska Street (formerly Italiiska) and the city’s literary memory: where writers walked, argued, wrote and found inspiration.
Primorsky Boulevard: walks, shadows, stories and veteran plane trees — a place where words usually come on their own.
The Archaeological Museum and the former first public library: how Odesa learned to be cultured — beautifully and with character.
The Odesa Opera House as a meeting point of literature, theatre and music: where the city says “bravo” and pretends it was not moved.
The Potemkin Stairs as inspiration and symbol — for travellers, writers and everyone who enjoys a little drama without too much grandeur.
Odesa legends about Gogol and the “second volume” — those very stories told in a low voice, but with a sparkle in the eye.
Moldavanka in the works of Sholem Aleichem and Babel: life that became literature — and vice versa.
Zhvanetsky as the modern voice of the city: why an Odesa phrase can sometimes be more precise than an entire novel.
The Literary Museum: monuments with humour, Odesa self-irony and that unmistakable smile that “understands more than it says”.

We recommend bringing

Dress comfortably and for the weather: comfortable shoes are a must, because Odesa is a city to be enjoyed, not endured. On a hot day, bring water and a hat — our sun is welcoming, but it has character. And make sure your phone is fully charged: beautiful places will appear far more often than power sockets.

Architectural Odesa is all about palaces, apartment houses, courtyards and streets designed with a clear vision rather than simply “growing wherever they could.” On this walk, you’ll discover the city’s main architectural styles and signature details: why Odesa looks so European, where to spot the work of master craftsmen, and how to tell Classicism from Art Nouveau without sitting through a boring lecture. Beautiful, intelligent and with that unmistakable Odesa smile.
