Odesa does not begin with monuments. It begins with a courtyard.
A place where architecture follows its own rules (and no textbook would dare argue), where the neighbours are like a miniature encyclopedia of nations, and hospitality works without weekends or lunch breaks.
A true Odesa courtyard is a whole world with its own “must-see attractions”:
a water pump where questions of cleanliness, everyday life and cooking are all solved at once;
a corner for “looking at the Moon” (especially popular in summer — in winter, the draught is so strong even romance starts coughing);
and a long communal table made from whatever happened to be available, yet set as if the celebration had been scheduled forever.
Odesa courtyards have another special feature: they know how to believe in people in advance.
It is perfectly normal here to raise a toast “to passing the exam successfully” when the exam has only just been taken and the results will not arrive until the day after tomorrow. Because in Odesa the logic is simple: if someone is a good person, everything will work out. And if it does not — well, the table is already set, so we will support them anyway.
A tour of Odesa’s courtyards is not a walk about “façades and dates”, but about the living city:
its habits, characters, funny details, warm stories and that special atmosphere where strangers become “one of us” faster than the tea has time to cool.
Every guide has “their own courtyard” — the one that once taught them how to understand Odesa. On this tour, those stories are shared generously: with humour, with respect and without unnecessary theatrics — just the way things are done here.
Come and wander through the Odesa that hides behind its gates. That is where the best part is.
Tour Program
- Start: Transfiguration Cathedral (entrance) Odesa immediately shows its “grand side” here: Cathedral Square, the city’s history and that moment when you realise this walk is not about speed, but about impressions.
- Cathedral Square Calm, bright and full of character. A place where the city does not speak loudly, but confidently — in true Odesa style.
- Courtyards around Cathedral Square The first glimpse behind the scenes of the city centre: galleries, staircases, washing lines and the feeling that Odesa speaks more quietly here — but always gets straight to the point.
- Passage An architectural jewel of Odesa and one of its most impressive inner courtyards: a glass roof, ornate stucco and one of those places where you look up and forget about time.
- Deribasivska Street and nearby courtyards Outside — the city’s grand stage; inside — real life: well-like courtyards, spiral staircases and everyday Odesa life that somehow manages to look beautiful.
- Palais Royal Courtyard A quiet pause behind the Opera House: a cosy courtyard with a fountain where the city takes a break from its own popularity.
- House with Atlantes (Gogol Street) and a nearby courtyard This is where Odesa switches to “high style”: the Atlantes hold up the façade, while the nearby courtyard carefully preserves the details and legends of the old city.
- Tour finish at the Opera House The finale comes at the city’s great beauty: here Odesa pretends to be strict and cultured — but still smiles with its eyes.

We Recommend Bringing
Dress comfortably and for the weather: comfortable shoes are a must, because Odesa is a city to be enjoyed, not endured. On a hot day, bring water and a hat — our sun is welcoming, but it has character. And make sure your phone is fully charged: beautiful places will appear far more often than power sockets.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Tour
Is a courtyard just “the space between buildings,” or is it an attraction in its own right?
In Odesa, a courtyard is like a little country of its own: with its own constitution (laundry on the lines), ministry of culture (a cat on the windowsill) and security service (a grandmother on the bench). The façade may look serious, but the courtyard is lively, noisy and honest.
Why are the staircases here so… unusual, as if someone designed them after a wine tasting?
These are spiral staircases — Odesa-style fitness from the 19th century. They were built to: a) save space, b) make life harder for guests with suitcases, and c) make romance look more dramatic: running down one of these staircases is already a story in itself.
Is the “Passage” a courtyard or a shopping arcade?
It’s a shopping arcade pretending to be a palace. Inside, it’s a real show: a glass roof, ornate stucco, sculptures… Odesa in its purest form: even shopping comes with architectural drama.
What if the locals in the courtyard think we’re outsiders?
It’s simple: smile, say hello and tell them, “We’re just here for a minute to admire the beauty.” In Odesa, that’s the password. Level two access — compliment the cat. Level three — don’t touch anyone else’s washing line: that’s practically international law.
How long is the tour: “just a little while” or “long enough to become a local”?
Usually 2.0–2.5 hours (the exact duration is listed in the description). The pace is moderate, and the route is designed to be interesting rather than athletic.
How can I pay for the tour?
You can pay for the tour:
- online through our website
- by bank card transfer (our managers will send the payment details by SMS)
- in cash at our office,or directly to the guide during the tour
What are the cancellation and refund terms if your plans suddenly take a different turn?
We understand — life can be a bit like an Odesa tram, suddenly changing its route. If you cancel the booking yourself and let us know in advance, the refund will be as follows:
- 7 calendar days before the event — 100% of the full price will be refunded
- 72 hours before the event starts — 50% will be refunded
- 1 day before the event — 25% will be refunded
Where do we meet, and how do I know it’s our guide — not just someone else standing there looking important?
The meeting point is listed on the tour page and in your booking confirmation. Please arrive 10–15 minutes early — that gives you enough time to find the group and still look like you were the first one there.
What should I wear and bring with me, besides a good mood (which is highly recommended too)?
Comfortable shoes are a must. Water is recommended. In summer — bring a hat and sun protection; in cooler seasons — a jacket suitable for the weather. If you’re planning to take lots of photos — charge your phone: Odesa knows how to fill up your memory fast.
