“Mannheim, Sülze & the Werewolf” (A Tour of German Settlements)

Sometimes, you just crave a little Europe. You know the feeling — a cathedral straight out of Austria, place names that sound unmistakably German, picture-perfect order, and all of it without airports, connecting flights, or the eternal question, “Where did I put my passport?” Here’s the good news: you can find all of this right here in the Odesa region. Welcome to the historic German colonies!

This tour is like opening a beautifully crafted treasure chest. Inside, you’ll discover Mannheim, Selz, a “little Strasbourg,” and an entire chapter of history that rarely makes it into the guidebooks. German settlers once called these places home, building prosperous farms, impressive churches and cathedrals, and close-knit communities. They left behind remarkable architecture, cherished traditions, fascinating family stories — and a legacy shaped by some truly dramatic twists of fate.

Along the way, prepare for plenty of “Wait, how is that even possible?” moments:
• A magnificent cathedral that looks as though it was packed into a suitcase somewhere in Austria and carefully reassembled in the Ukrainian countryside;
• A former German settlement that witnessed dramatic episodes of the Russian Civil War — where history comes alive along the very roads and routes where events unfolded;
• And the extraordinary story of Sergei Pankejeff, better known as the “Wolf Man,” one of Sigmund Freud’s most famous patients, whose life had a surprising connection to this region.

And there’s more to this journey than history alone. You’ll explore a museum dedicated to the everyday lives of German settlers, discover the little details that bring the past to life, and enjoy fascinating stories without a single boring lecture. To round off the day, we’ll stop for a relaxing picnic in a scenic green spot beside the Kuchurhan Estuary. After all, German heritage is wonderful, but a day in southern Ukraine without some fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a leisurely break? That simply wouldn’t be the Odesa way!
